WHAT COMES TO MIND WHEN YOU THINK OF BEAUTY?

When we thought of beauty we decided to turn to google for inspiration, instead we weren't pleased with their definition of beauty.

Then we decided to turn to bing for help but we got the same results that we yet again, weren't happy with.

Finally we came up with the solution to rely on ourselves and bring this situation to the light which is where "The Beauty Project" was born.

GOOGLE AND BING'S DEFINITION OF BEAUTY

WHAT'S WRONG WITH THE PICTURE?

if you haven't noticed anything wrong with the picture there is hardly a single black woman in the search itself the only picture they'll show is your typical mixed black girl and that's not right because one picture doesn't define how all black women look.

WHY DID YOU DO THIS TOPIC?

The whole point of The Beauty Project is to show our audience that what you see isn't something you need to aspire to be because you're already beautiful regardless of your skin color.

WHY DO YOU THINK THIS MATTERS? WHY SHOULD IT AFFECT ME?

The reason why this issue matters is because black women and other races deserve recognition for their beauty not just one race, not to mention it affects younger audiences because when they only see one race as "beautiful" or "pretty" they themselves will want to be defined as "beautiful" or "pretty" by trying and wanting to be Google and Bing's definition of beauty which isn't right because they are beautiful in their own way and trying to be someone you're not shows you aren't happy with you're own beauty.

INTERVIEWS ABOUT BEAUTY

We went downtown to some local popular retail stores. We thought that going to a clothing store would be a good idea to do interviews because they portray beauty in many different ways. The first woman we interviewed (Anonymous) defined beauty as "totally superficial." We noticed that every time we showed the women the screenshot of the google search "pretty women" their reaction was that it mattered more of what was on the inside rather than what was on the outside. The second woman we had interviewed actually said that she had seen these types of things when she was little. We asked the second women (Yewande) How the screenshot had affected her, she said "I remember being in elementary school crying to my mom asking her why I couldn't have blonde hair and blue eyes. This (points at screenshot) is not beautiful, they are beautiful in their own way but this is not the only definition of beauty." Before we left the store we interviewed two more women, the first women (Erin) we had pictures of white women that she thought was most beautiful then we had her do the same with the pictures of black women. At the end of this we had her choose from the white girl she picked from and the black girl she picked. We were surprised when she picked the white woman as her end result because most of the women we interviewed had the end result of the black woman. When we screen-shotted the search from google we thought that everyone would prove it right thinking that a white women was more beautiful than someone of another race. Instead only one women chose that the white women was more beautiful proving the screenshot wrong. keep in mind This is a small sample size and is not representative of the United States, it does show that beauty standards don't always correlate with what we see on google.

EVOLUTION OF BEAUTY HAS IT CHANGED?

The video below shows that a black doll and a white doll are placed in front of children of all races. They were then asked questions like " Which doll do like most?" and " Which doll looks nice to you? Which looks mean?" The results were that many of the children chose the white doll as the one liked most and the one they thought looked the nicest. When asked why they thought the white doll looked the nicest they answered with" because its white. Then when it was the black doll they were asked why it looked mean and which they answered with " Because its black."
